Models of Environmental Sustainability in Universities: A literature Review

Resumen:

This article presents a comprehensive review of the extant literature on environmental sustainability models developed within academic institutions. A qualitative approach was employed because it is a descriptive, non-experimental research using methodologies validated by authors to identify the benefits and opportunities related to environmental sustainability. This was achieved through a literature review of various studies, theories, and successful practices. The findings indicate a marked interest in environmental sustainability among institutions of higher education. These institutions, in their capacity to train professionals who contribute to development and progress, serve as strategic partners in environmental management and the implementation of sustainable practices on university campuses. It is recommended that this partnership be evaluated. The present systematic literature review contributes to the advancement of the discourse on environmental sustainability in higher education by identifying current trends, challenges, and best practices in the implementation of sustainable policies at the university level. The results indicate a mounting commitment on the part of universities to contribute to sustainability in areas such as environmental education, curriculum, and various strategies to make visible this contribution to the environment from the academy.
